About the Institute

Adhar, or the Association of Parents of Special Adults, is a pioneering community-based institute for intellectually disabled adults. The institute takes responsibility for the development and well-being of its residents throughout their lives and is also working to set up an old-age home for the ageing parents of these children. Adhar was founded in 1990 by Mr. M.G. Gore, a renowned social worker from the Children’s Aid Society, who wanted to build a space that could serve as a lifelong sanctuary for intellectually disabled adults. Adhar is unaided and runs entirely on the contributions of its residents’ parents. Adhar is home to more than 100 people it supports and 97 staff members who help take care of them.
